Thank you to everyone who came out last night to hear Ellen Carmichael’s presentation on AAUW partner CARE’s work in Haiti since the earthquake. Here are some links to information and some ideas about how you can help:
Statistics related to CARE’s work in Haiti
For those who would like to get involved, CARE would love to have more Ohioans (or citizens anywhere, really) in the CARE Action Network. If you submit your email address, CARE will notify you when there is a need for citizen letters to local elected officials asking for action on issues related to global poverty. Usually all they ask for is a letter or an email. You choose which projects you would like to act on. This advocacy work lets our elected officials know that people in Ohio care about the problems of women and children in the developing world and want them to act on our behalf. Those in the local action network may also be invited to attend in-district meetings with Representative Marcy Kaptur and Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman on CARE’s behalf.
If you would like to get more involved, you can also attend the CARE National Conference and Celebration in Washington, DC, March 8-10. Confirmed speakers include former First Lady Laura Bush, philanthropist Melinda Gates, and journalist Judy Woodruff.
If you are interested in the issues of women and girls in the developing world, please also mark your calendars for a book discussion on Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women and Girls Worldwide, by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. The discussion will be held on April 14, from 7-8:30 at the Lourdes College Franciscan Center Boardroom, and light refreshments will be served.
