Women’s History Month!

Toledo is so lucky to have so many organizations working in the area to empower the women and girls.  As your president I’m honored to represent AAUW when working with some of these organizations.  This is the third year our branch has collaborated with the Women of the World Symposium during Women’s History Month, this year with a focus on programming for area teenage girls.  See more info below.  I’m also excited to work with a new group, Women of Toledo.  We are planning a Equal Pay Day event for April 14th, watch for more details soon.  Just to name a few.

Did you see…  AAUW’s President, Patricia Fae Ho,  will be the Keynote speaker at the Ohio State Convention May 1-3?  Plan on attending, and call or send me a note so we can car pool!   419.787.8258

There is so much more is planned, mark your calendars and we will see you at the next Event!    -Mickey Radtkin

President’s Letter May 2014

Another year is about to come to an end, and what a busy year it has been! As members of AAUW/Toledo, you can be proud of all your branch has accomplished. For many years, our branch has been recognized at State Convention, and this year was no exception. We received several awards: The Starz Communication Award, Daffodil Diversity Award, and Mission-Based Programming Award. What all this means is that we have been busy this past year, providing a variety of programs that advance the mission of equity for all women and girls, and then communicating our efforts with the wider community.

Here is some of what we have accomplished: *Gave Camperhips to girls to attend Nature, Science, and Math summer programs *Donated books highlighting notable women to Toledo Public School libraries *Awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships to University of Toledo women scholars *Participated in fundraising events to support these gifts *Collaborated with other organizations to present programs such as Voter Education, WOW Symposium for Women, Arab Americans in Toledo, and more. *Honored our campers with an educational dinner last fall, and celebrated our UT scholars with a Holiday Brunch last winter *Shared our passion for Women’s History through Women in History Troupe appearances at the Wildwood Manor House and many other venues *Formed a new “Dining for Women” chapter *Engaged famed writer/director/actress Thea Iberall who led us in We Did It for You!, a moving readers’ theater production *Shared information on Equal Pay Day at Plate 21. And we can’t forget the activities of our Study Groups where we informed ourselves and conversed about important issues!

Keep up the good work. And have a great summer!

People Called Women (PCW) Book Store Announces “Steinem’s Sisters”

In honor of Gloria Steinem’s 80th birthday on March 25, PCW, in cooperation with other women-serving organizations, is launching “Steinem’s Sisters,” a lending library and archive out of PCW (Ohio’s only feminist bookstore) that will lend and house important books, from feminist classics to brand new feminist writings. Steinem’s Sisters will focus on books that deal with reproductive rights, violence against women issues, multicultural issues and rights, LGBT rights, non-sexist children’s books, disability rights, economic justice issues, academic books used in local women’s studies programs, and
of course all of Gloria’s titles.
PCW will begin by filling two racks purchased at the time of PCW’s opening 20 years ago from the closing of Lion’s store. The racks were used by them—and here’s where the poetry comes in—as panty hose displays! PCW has used the racks as feminist magazine and children’s books displays throughout the years. They will now fill them with kick-off titles for Steinem’s Sisters.
Here’s how AAUW members can help:

1) Donate used books in good condition that fit the criteria for the library.

2) Make a financial pledge to help PCW purchase new titles and rent additional space. Checks (tax deductible; note “Steinem’s Sisters” in the memo) can be sent to “Toledo NOW” c/o PCW, 6060 Renaissance Pl., Ste. F, Toledo, OH 43623

3)Volunteer to help catalogue the books and research new titles

4)Attend on-going meetings to work toward the goal of a non-profit community center that will house the library/archive and also be a center for feminist education and activism. Questions?

President’s Letter

Michelle, swamped by household moves and healthcare changes, sends her thanks to all who participated in We Did It For You! this month. She particularly thanks branch member Madge Levinson who originated the idea and who hosted the wonderful playwright/poet/director,Thea Iberall. The performance received rave
reviews!
Mickey also encourages members to attend the women’s symposium WOW on Sat., March 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at UT’s Scott Park Campus. The event is a collaboration of area women’s organizations, AAUW/Toledo among them, and is free and open to the public. Registration is requested, however, and the first 100 registrants
will receive a free lunch. Visit http://www.wowtoledo.org Questions? Phone Shelley Kotz, 419-536-1898

President’s Letter : Can Grandmothers Change the World?

Recently I listened to Ted Radio Talks on “Disruptive Leadership”; the title made me curious. I wasn’t surprised that several of the interviews were about women and leadership: “Grandmothers are respected, natural-born leaders,” said Bunker Roy, a social activist from India who has been cultivating women leaders from remote areas of the world. He has found that women, not men, are the ideal change agents for their villages. He described one of the women he trained to solar-electrify their village as typical: “She went like a grandmother and came back like a tiger.” Of course they did!
In another interview, Sheryl Sandberg was asked if she saw herself as a disruptive leader. “What I immediately want to say is ‘no,’ but I need to say ‘yes.’” In her book Lean In, she tells women to own their successes. “I am trying to disrupt the status quo. And I’m clear on that. The status quo—complete stagnation for women achieving leadership roles—is not good enough.” Sheryl challenges us to celebrate and cultivate leadership abilities in girls. If you hear someone call a girl “bossy,” just say, “No, she is showing off her executive leadership skills.” What girls in your life are showing off their executive leadership skills, and what messages are you giving them? “Keep your head up! Don’t always let the boys go first. Lean in!” What messages do we give ourselves and our women workmates? How about, “Sit at the table. Take risks. Don’t leave before you leave.”

President’s Letter

As the year comes to a close, this Holiday season we give thanks for the many opportunities and advancements for women and girls during 2013. We are proud that AAUW led the fight that resulted in President Obama’s signing into law a comprehensive VAWA (Violence against Women Reauthorization Act). Also we are proud that the Equal Pay Act was elevated in the President’s inaugural and state of the union speeches. Women still earn only seventy-seven cents to every dollar earned by men, however. So we look forward to continuing our efforts in 2014 and increasing this figure.

To stay informed, visit our web site and share with your friends. Also “like” our facebook page: search Toledo American Asasociation of University Women, and share the post.

I look forward to meeting the recipients of the Wemmeer Scholarships and our first recipient of the Marge Lee STEM scholarship at the Holiday Brunch Dec. 7, as we celebrate these amazing women and their work. See you there.

Yours in AAUW, Mickey Radtkin
